Walking Hand in Hand: High5for48 Virtual Walk for Sunshine Association

In the warm embrace of community and compassion, we celebrate the 48th anniversary of the Sunshine Association with a heartfelt initiative: the High5for48 Virtual Walk. This endeavour is not just a walk; it’s a stride towards support, understanding, and empowerment for children with disabilities and their families.

The story of Sunshine Association began in 1976, when a group of determined mothers, led by Sylvia Langenhoven, embarked on a mission to create a haven for their intellectually disabled children. They envisioned a place where early intervention, stimulation, and parental support intersected harmoniously. Thus, a small playgroup was born, nestled within the welcoming walls of Parktown North Methodist Church, graciously offered rent-free.

Through fundraising efforts and the employment of dedicated professionals like Brenda Solarsh, the association expanded its scope, embracing the expertise of occupational, speech, and physiotherapists. However, the journey of Sunshine Association was not without its trials.

In a testament to resilience and determination, the Sunshine Centre found its permanent home in Craighall. Spearheaded by the indomitable Shirley Thomas, the acquisition of the Shieling Nursery School transformed aspirations into reality. With boundless support from generous donors and the tireless efforts of volunteers, the Craighall Centre opened its doors in September 1985, ushering in a new era of hope and possibility.

As we embark on the High5for48 Virtual Walk, we carry the torch of compassion ignited by Sylvia Langenhoven and her fellow pioneers. Each step we take resonates with the spirit of unity, inclusion, and solidarity. We stride forward, hand in hand, towards a brighter future for every child touched by the warmth of Sunshine Association’s embrace.

The High5for48 Virtual Walk welcomes everyone with open arms. Whether you’re strolling through bustling city streets or meandering along serene countryside paths, your steps resonate with the collective heartbeat of our community.

To participate, simply secure your ticket for R150, which includes the cost of your very own Sunshine T-shirt—a badge of honour to wear proudly as you walk. Rally your family, friends, and colleagues to join in this celebration of compassion and resilience. Together, we forge a path towards a brighter future, ensuring that hope remains steadfast for children with special needs.

But the impact of your participation extends beyond the bounds of this virtual walk. School learners have the opportunity to earn 6 hours of community service by taking part in the High5for48 Walk. Simply submit your entry and unleash your creativity by crafting Sunshine Association posters, placards, or any other promotional materials. As you walk, capture moments of inspiration and advocacy, sharing them with us at ruth@sunshine.org.za. Your efforts not only earn you community service hours but also amplify the message of inclusion and support for children with special needs.

So, let’s lace up our shoes, raise our virtual high-fives, and stride forward together. With each step we take, we reaffirm our commitment to building a world where every child shines bright with the light of possibility and promise. Join us in this uplifting journey, where compassion knows no bounds, and the spirit of community prevails. Together, we walk hand in hand towards a future filled with hope and endless potential.
